Nintendo has revealed our first look at the successor to the Nintendo Switch, but still has many more secrets to share!

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially revealed through a trailer released by the company. The 2:21 video shows a rendering of the original Switch, slowly morphing into the next-gen console, highlighting the (subtle) differences between the two gaming machines.

What's different about the Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo didn't go into great detail about the processing power of the Nintendo Switch 2. It looks like the console can be played both docked and in handheld mode (just like the Switch) and it also will be a cartridge-based console (though Nintendo has flagged that there may be some copatibility issues with a few Switch titles - hopefully not many)!

From the trailer, we can see the screen is larger, there's a different style of stand to prop the console up, but the most noticeable difference is the design of the controllers. With more stuble colour accents than the original Switch, the controllers (not sure if they're still going to be called Joy-Cons) seem to have a different connection system than their predecessor.

Switch 2 has a larger screen and redesigned controllers.

The only game that was shown in the trailer was a Mario Kart track that looks unfamilar. So whether that video was created as a placeholder for the trailer or is a glimpse at one of the first launch titles for the system is anyone's guess.

When does the Switch 2 release in Canada?

There are many things we still don't know about the Nintendo Switch 2, including when it will be out. Nintendo had previously said during an investor's call in late 2024 that the next console would be available in 2025, and this is seemingly confirmed with a giant "2025" at the 1:59 mark in the trailer.

Nintendo will be hosting special events around the world called "Nintendo Switch 2 Experiences," and according to their website, players will have the chance to go hands-on with the new console. There is one stretch of dates in Canada, April 25-27 and the host city is Toronto. In case you're doing some travelling, here's the full list of all dates and locations Nintendo has shared so far:

We want more info!

This trailer is a fun tease, confirming a few aspects that Nintendo fans have suspected about the new console. But a glimpse like this is only enough to make us want to learn more about the hardware that will follow the incredibly successful Nintendo Switch.

There will be a Nintendo Direct on April 2nd, where we will hopefully learn more, including specs, information about the dock, and (hopefully) a list of launch and upcoming titles.
